You want to buy a new TV.Â

You want to be able to kick back at the end of the day and relax in front of a TV that displays a good image, that isn’t too expensive and is good value for your hard-earned money. Unfortunately, choosing a good TV isn’t all that easy. Back in the good old days, you just picked the brand you trusted and the size you wanted. Today television has really changed, and there’s more to know if you want to make a good choice.
While working in the electronics department of a large store, I did a fair bit of research trying to boil down all the data into simple explanations people could get their heads around. I got fairly good at delivering the information people actually needed and cut through to what was most important. This blog is an attempt to deliver a simple, common sense explanation of what’s important when you’re trying to buy a TV or some other piece of electronics.
This blog isn’t for hard-core videophiles. This isn’t for those who want detailed comparisons of the newest and greatest televisions or recommendations on particular brands. There won’t be explanations of ‘how it works’ by giving you diagrams of the substrate layers that make up a display. The goal of this blog is to help the average consumer understand what he or she needs to know to walk into a store well-informed and prepared to buy electronics. This is your guide to the list of features and specifications various TVs and other devices offer, in order to help you decide which ones matter to you and which ones don’t.
This blog will give you the information you need to understand your choices and ask yourself some basic, common sense questions so that you know what you want. There isn’t one ‘best’ TV out there. Different TVs have different strengths that make them more or less suited to where you might put a TV and how you might watch it. If you understand your own expectations and are able to interpret the marketing lingo, you’ll be more likely to wind up with something that works well for you.

This is a great summary. I have read the whole blog series to date and appreciate the education. We are likely to look for a new TV in the next couple of months and I am now armed with some knowledge that will help to make a better informed decision. Thanks.
